A cross-border walking trail
VEF
initiated the development of Via Egnatia as a cross border hiking trail.
Meanwhile there are several participants and partnerorganisations in the
different countries involved in this megaproject. This cooperative effort
is necessary, as there are many problems to overcome, before VE can be fully
operant and safe as a hikingpath. VEF's technical team is working on the
exploration and mapping of the different parts of the route, which will
result in concrete advises to the local authorities and eventually in a
good route description and signposting of the whole Via.
It is foreseen that in the future local inhabitants along VE can start small
enterprises, like Bed and Breakfasts, and donkey/horse-stations.
As a pioneer-organisation VEF organised the Caravan Journey on foot, which
has taken place in May 2009, from Durrës via Elbasan, Ohrid and Bitola to
the Greek border. The second part has taken place in May-June-July 2010
through Greece and Turkey.
In 2011 the trail from Elbasan to Lake Ohrid has been signposted. The first guidebook with a description and gps waypoints for this stretch is ready and available! See Walking in 2011
